"It’s dark because you are trying too hard. Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply. Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them. I was so preposterously serious in those days… Lightly, lightly — it’s the best advice ever given me. So throw away your baggage and go forward. There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet, trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair. That’s why you must walk so lightly. Lightly, my darling."

These two guys were new to town. Young bucks working for skateboard company. There was a really attractive woman who was a little tipsy who flirted with the bearded guy. He was temped but passed.

It’s getting colder and the beer garden out back is getting less traffic after the sun goes down. The space heaters are becoming popular entities.

Old Man Cartoonist Club meets once a month to discuss comics, ailments and bitterness. We also draw stuff. It’s amazing.
Cartoonists are an odd mix of insecure and ambitious. As I get older and look at how little I’ve produced, it feels really good being around such wildly productive cartoonists like Geoff Vasile and Fred Noland. Fame and fortune are mercurial at best. Fuck that shit, really. It’s nice that some cartoonists make a living and are famous. However, making the work should bring you joy. It should be a healthy compulsion like it is for Fred and Geoff. A lot of cartoonists quit when the shouldn’t. They get bitter and lose the joy. The work makes things better (it always has for me). Any rejection (epic or slight) if not handled properly can derail your work (and your life).I struggle with that. I made a lot of mistakes with my career. I stopped working for awhile. These recent sketchbook drawings are pure joy. Sometimes strangers talk to me. Other times I sit and take in a serene moment. Either way they make me happy. I hope to fold this feeling into my comics.

Halloween is Comingdrawn at Heart & DaggerOakland, Ca
Drawing these unsuspecting people has shown me some unexpectedly private moments. I picked this couple because they were pretty rigid. Particularly the guy on the left. From what I could tell he was talking about leaving a job he didn’t like and his plans going forward. She had some advice but it was a pleasant exchange. After about twenty minutes, he just crumpled onto the table. She gently patted his head. I was suddenly really uncomfortable, feeling like I witness something so private and intimate. I stopped drawing and finished it later. He left, telling her he’d see her at home.
She sat and smoked another cigarette after he left.
